COMPETENCE
BASED LEARNING
(By Lucy Helena Alves)
On October 16th, our class was about Competence Based Education. The lecture was with Mrs. Irma Kunnari, professor at Hamk University of Applied Sciences.
In a first moment, we were invited to talk about our personal characteristics. Emphasizing who we are, what are feature that represent us and what are professional goals with the Gira Mundo program.
After that, the professor introduced a discussion about Competence Based Education, also it has been known Competence Based Learning (CBL). They are highlighted the definition, importance and features about that approach.
CBL can be defined as an approach to teaching and learning effectively. Using more concrete skills than abstract learning. In this perspective, the approach is centered in the learners. The students are assessed on their individual competency and not in an isolation form.
According to Sáchez and Ruiz, et al (2008), CBL is a learning process centered round the capacity and responsibility of each student, and the development of his or her autonomy and self-reliance. In short, it is a system of teaching and learning focused on the student, instead of the previous professor-centered system.
These pedagogical competences are intended in Gira Mundo Finlândia Paraíba Program. This methodology considers three steps: knowing, that is theorical knowledge; doing, which is the pratical knowledge and being, that is self-regulative and social - cultural knowledge.
CBL has became an important topic in education, because it measures learning rather than time. This approach organize the students learning in: interests, needs and aspirations. For students and teachers the goals have been clear. The learners show thier progress by demonstrating with their knowledge and skills.
